Why You Lose Balance During Yoga (And How to Fix It)

If you’ve ever fallen out of a posture and thought,

“I just have bad balance” — you’re not alone.

But balance isn’t something you either have or don’t have.

It’s something you build.

And more often than not, it comes down to a few key things.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Your Focus (Drishti)

Where your eyes go, your body follows.

If your gaze is moving, your balance will be too.

Pick a point in front of you and stay with it. Use it as your grounding point for the entire balancing series.

Lock onto that spot and, no matter how much your mind wants to wander, keep your eyes fixed.

Think of it as your anchor — something you can trust to steady you.

It might sound simple, but when you truly commit to that focus point, your balance becomes far more reliable.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Your Breath

This is the one most people overlook.

It’s very hard to stay balanced when your breath is rushed or strained. If you’re panting or your chest is moving heavily, it will naturally throw you off.

Instead, keep your breathing steady and controlled.

If your breath starts to slip, ease out of the posture slightly.

Finding calm in your breath gives you the space to regain control — and that’s where balance begins to improve.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Your Standing Leg

In most balancing postures, the real work is happening in the standing leg.

Before you even move into the posture, make sure that leg is fully engaged.

Think of it like the trunk of a tree — strong, stable, holding everything else in place.

Lift through the thigh, avoid sinking into the hip, and feel your entire foot grounded from heel to toe.

Take a moment to really feel that stability before you move.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Resilience

Falling out of a posture is not failure.

The balancing series is difficult — that’s the point.

If, for a few classes, all you can do is focus on holding your balance without pushing deeper into the posture, that is still progress.

Every attempt matters.

If you do lose it, step straight back in:

ground your foot, find your focus point, steady your breath, and try again.

No one is watching. It’s a space to practise, not perform.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Takeaway

Balance rarely comes naturally, and it can feel frustrating when it doesn’t.

But every time you try, you’re building it.

And showing up is what counts.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next time you’re in the studio, take a little more awareness into the balancing series.

Slow it down. Focus your gaze. Let your breath lead.

You might be surprised how much changes.
